Canon 18-55mm EF-S Kit Lens

Comments

I got it with the camera and I like it, I have not used it lately as I got a few more lens to play with now but I think it good basic lens and very versatile.
Martin,
I heartily agree with you, and tbh remember when all film SLRs came with the 50mm 1.8 lens, which at the time was quite a bit laughed at, because of its build quality, among other things. But now? This lens is one of the must have lenses on everyone's list and I'm soooo glad I kept mine from film days. Some of my favourite images have been taken with that digital kit lens and as long as you keep in mind its sweet spot and try to shoot there, you can get some great images.
Thanks guys - I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the Canon kit lens is not as bad as all the reviewers seem to make out.
To be fair also, I find it makes much more sense in terms of focal length for a standard zoom than the 28-135IS that comes with the 30D, which equates to a 45-216, which is just weird.

And I agree with Lee that the thrifty 50 is great, especially in its metal-mount mk1 version.
I actually had my 18-55mm back out yesterday for the first time in a long time (I've been playing with new lenses) and was more than happy with the results:

I did feel tho with some of my more traditional landscape photos (not yet blogged) that there was a slight curve to my horizons when I had the lens at its widest 18mm. Does anyone else notice that?
I shoot with the kit lens all the time. I have gotten some great images out of that baby but I know it's far from the pro lens series. I shoot all RAW and can tweak any funny things in Lightroom or Photoshop. For the money you can't beat it - and it's great to walk around the city with and not worry.
I think all kit lenses get the same bad rap, after all they're built to a cost. My Pentax 18-55 has a metal mount at least, but it too shows soft corners wide open and both barrel distortion and vignetting at the wide end. Doesn't stop me though, great walkaround lens and I will only replace it when either it breaks or I win the lottery.
Well I'm looking to upgrade from my kit lens; but not because I pixel peep. I reviewed all the exif data on my most recent shoots and decided that it was time to find a lens that matched my style. The 18-55 kit is too slow, too wide & too short to get the shots I want.

Anyone know of a Tamron 28-75/2.8 that's going cheep like a budgie?
I have bought the Canon 400D last December. I needed to get the standard lens kit as I did not have time to check for a "better" lens. I knew that the lens kit was not the best on the planet. But still today I would not know what to buy.
I have written about my impressions on moving from a Point & Shoot (the very good Canon S3) to a DSLR (http://tisvernicio.vox.com/library/post/stepping-up-to-a-dslr.html), and re-reading it I have noticed that the lens were not really a problem.
That said, I have made pleasing pictures with this lens kit, but at the same time, getting to know the camera better and better, I have an increasing feeling that the lens are not making me getting the most out of the camera body. I also have the tendency to shoot in JPG, and this doesn't help.
That said, I think that the lens kit, at the price at which they are offered, are a good way to begin, and I think this is the purpose of Canon. If you are an experienced photographer and already know or own other lenses, buying the body only would be the best option.
Saying that the lens kit is "bad" is a wrong statement - I think it is "good" for the purposes to which it is being offered for.

The bend has destroyed almost all of my landscape photos and this has really upset me. Someone said it was the natural curve of the earth (is it) and others have said it's because it's a cheap lens. I get sick of it and unless some software can fix them then they are useless pictures.

I will let you guess what I think of it.Don't waste your time with it. Spend the money and get something better! CANON DO SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR KIT LENSE!!!! Let me think....Oh Yeah! JUST DON'T PROVIDE ONE! STOP MAKING THEM or at least tell people before they purchase one that ALL THE HORIZONS WILL BE CURVED!!!

Cazzbar - Try ptlens plugin to correct the distortion. If you don't like the lens spend more money and get something else. I rarely use the 18-55 myself these days but I still don't think it's as bad as people proport especially if you're short on cash but long on enthusiasm.
