Lynn Rockwell: One of Our Own is Gone
My comeback half-marathon on Sunday went OK. My friend who I was "running with" finished almost ten minutes ahead of me which wasn't good for my morale. So I was beating myself up about how much work I had to do to get get a decent time in a full marathon (right now, I can't even contemplate running Sunday's distance twice) when I got home and went through my blog feeds.
Other people's bad news can quickly make your own aches and moans very insignificant, and I came across news on Sunday that stopped me dead in my tracks. One of our own, Lynn Rockwell, had lost her battle with cancer. I didn't know Lynn long or that well, but it can't help but make you think about your own mortality, making the most of opportunities (especially photographic ones), and what a waste of talent and energy this death seems.
When I first started on Vox a few moths ago, there were no Groups so in order to find like minded Voxers I searched on posts daily for anyone writing about photography and that's how I found Lynn. Lynn a was passionate, driven and talented photographer and, although we exchanged little more than a few pleasantries, her death has affected me and, of course, made me consider my own priorities.
All Lynn wanted to do was to make it to the Chicago photobloggers meet up in April (she literally dreamed about it). She just wanted the time, energy and health to get there and see her virtual community in the flesh. Here I was moaning about being a few minutes slower in a distance race than I used to be, and Lynn was struggling to catch her breath to walk short distances or up a couple of steps. Talk about perspective!
