Things I Threw Out Today
I've mentioned before what a pack-rat I am. I doubt I'll ever be completely cured but in order to humiliate myself into controlling this habit I thought I would occasionally list the things I threw out that day.
Today I was feeling a little over whelmed by the clutter in my office so I took half an hour out of my day to just trash some of it. Amongst the casualties were:
Today I was feeling a little over whelmed by the clutter in my office so I took half an hour out of my day to just trash some of it. Amongst the casualties were:
- 3 Years worth of Wired, PC and other industry magazines
- Stacks of floppy disks including a boot set for DOS 6.1
- My incomplete engineering notebook from projects I was working on in 1994
- A collapsible high-chair I had loaned to a friend at work 3 years ago (we don't have kids - don't ask)
- An external 28k modem.
- Spent airplane and car calendars for the last 5 years (I don't even use paper calendars except to fill wall space)
- A UK computer power cord.
- Obsolete printouts from websites than no longer exist about subjects that are no longer important.

We all knew my grandfather was a pack-rat -- he used to save catalogs and hang onto every junky free gift he ever received. One year when we did a family-wide spring cleaning, he perched himself in a chair at the front door and "vetoed" items we were trying to trash.
None of us could have guessed the full extent, however, until he died. We unearthed bags full of plastic combs, shoeboxes full of worn-out old wallets, and every pair of glasses he ever owned between 1957 and 2002.
So... well done, you! But wouldn't it just be the way of things if you found that tomorrow there was a sudden, pressing need for one of these items?
